When You Feel Like Giving Up

It was the eighth week of my third term in counselling and the things were getting tougher. We had gotten so used to doing assessments that were not so full on that when we got to term three, we had a change of things. Our tutors were changed; the units to be done took our time and thoughts as we were being prepped for the second year. Do not get me wrong, I loved studying Christian counselling, it has helped me a great deal, only that I had become complacent and when I was faced with all these deadlines to submit and I have to deal with the rest of life demands I started having thoughts about not going further. I found myself saying, “I do not know whether I will go all the way to the other levels”. Thank God for our significant others, because then my hubby heard me say that as I sat next to him and he told me, ‘we need to aim higher, you cannot give up’. That brought me back from my irrational thoughts of giving up that were not helpful at all to me. He helped me go through cognitive restructuring whereby I had to challenge these new thoughts I was having of giving up to start thinking positively that I can go as far as I wanted to and I should not limit God or myself. Many are the times we get unhelpful thoughts (irrational thinking) and forget how far we have come.

We tend to forget the promises spoken to us by Father God and start entertaining the devil and he is more than happy to indulge in the neglect of our spiritual lives.  Mary Mwakalu

This is because we lose sight of the one who is able to help us live this life victoriously and we then start concentrating on ourselves. We kind of put the Lord at the back of our minds and it is like, ‘I have to do this or go there’. As I was busy entertaining these unhelpful thoughts I remembered this scripture; “May God Himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.  The one who calls you is faithful, and He will do it.” (1 Thessalonians 5:23)

I learned that it is not I who will do it but Christ in me who is faithful to see me through in accomplishing His purpose in my life, that I just have to trust in Him who is able to do all things and that nothing is impossible with Him. Mary Mwakalu

A friend of mine told me a story of her Pastor who had just started a church and he felt as if he was hitting the wall every time he did anything. He asked the Lord for help and the answer he got was to just take a step forward.

Progress comes with taking a step forward. Mary Mwakalu

We all reach that place of forgetfulness due to, circumstances in life that can shift our focus from Christ and we end up doing things that do not benefit us. In those times, we need Him the most and to be surrounded by godly people who can exhort us with the word of God or just people to talk to. Lesson 1. When things get tough, do not give up, keep pressing on and aim higher. Yes, there will be tough times but they will not last forever, for nothing is permanent on earth. 2. Trust in God by taking a leap of faith, He will not fail you when you undoubtedly depend on Him.
