WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A SERVANT OF GOD?

But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant. -Matthew 23:11

What does it mean to be a servant? The word servant is often perceived as something bad and unworthy and in some sense it could be. People may look down on someone who has taken on that role and the person becomes insignificant in their eyes. Being a servant is the least of the positions we human beings want to take, because we tend to seek approval, be accepted or acknowledged for our work. For one to be the good and faithful servant spoken of in scripture, they must have a different way of doing things that is not carnal. Ephesians 5:1-2; James 4:10; 1 Corinthians 10:24; John 12:26.

A servant of God is to be trustworthy to do the work of God faithfully without looking for acclamation from man.

A servant of God is to be trustworthy to do the work of God faithfully without looking for acclamation from man.The heart condition must be blameless before God and man. The motives are to be pure and not of conceit, not to please man or seek vainglory, ‘For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ,’ Galatians 1:20.

Any minister of God, is a gift to the church and their life is one of service and not lording it over the people God has given them.

Any minister of God, is a gift to the church and their life is one of service and not lording it over the people God has given them,Ephesians 4:11-12.The Lord of lords came not to be served but to serve, so how then can the one sent by the Lord Jesus Christ be greater than Him? It is not biblical for it is said, “A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master,” Matthew 10:24.

The servant’s heart is always looking at pleasing the master. There is a need for humility when serving others, because it will not always be easy to serve. There are challenges to it but if Christ did it, and then we can do it too. He gives His grace to all so that the work He started can continue.

Let us not look at how man will receive or treat us; our job as children of God is to serve as Christ did. To imitate Him to the fullest and with the help of the Holy Spirit, it is possible to serve and remain faithful to Him who has called us, Ephesians 5:1-2. The mistake we often make is to look at man’s perspective which is flawed and we stop listening to the Holy Spirit’s voice.

Humility, faithfulness and obedience are good attributes to have as we serve others .

Humility, faithfulness and obedience are good attributes to have as we serve others .For whether we show the light of God through preaching the gospel or acts of service like showing love mercy, healing, raising the dead or feeding and helping the needy, it is not for our sake but for Christ. We do it because it is what is expected of us as followers of Jesus Christ, 2 Corinthians 4:5. It is His ministry in us that we continue.

We do not appoint or send ourselves, but Jesus Christ is the one who chooses,

We do not appoint or send ourselves, but Jesus Christ is the one who chooses and has already shown us by example how we are to do it, ‘Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you, John 15:16. So let everyone think on how they have been serving Christ. Re-evaluate to see whether it pleases Him or man. If it is man, repent about it and go back to serving the Father according to His will and not your will.
