Be Your True Self

Updated: Oct 2, 2020

It is better to stick to who you really are than to be like someone else. Being you is the best way to go. Daniel was given armour by King Saul when he was to fight Goliath, but he could not continue wearing it. He could not go and fight with it because he was ‘not used to them’.

1 Samuel 17:38-39 Then Saul dressed David in his own tunic. He put a coat of armour on him and a bronze helmet on his head. David fastened on his sword over the tunic and tried walking around because he was not used to them. “I cannot go in these,” he said to Saul, “because I am not used to them.” So, he took them off.

David knew his place and his identity. He did not do things like other people. We read of him again when he is dancing to the Lord; 2 Samuel 6:14 And David danced before the Lord with all his might, wearing a priestly garment. He was being himself and his main goal was to please God, 2 Samuel 6:21 David retorted to Michal, “I was dancing before the Lord, who chose me above your father and all his family! He appointed me as the leader of Israel, the people of the Lord, so I celebrate before the Lord.

When you are being yourself and stepping into who you have been called to be, there will always be those who think you should not do what you are doing or even be yourself. That is why they will give you their own stuff so that you can be like them. From their perspective, they do not believe you can make it be better than they are. So, they would rather have you say they helped you, than have you standing on your feet and being yourself. Avoid these people at any cost. They are there to bring you down to their level of insecurity.

Back to David’s dancing, when he danced for the Lord, it was in a manner that filled his wife Micah with contempt. 2 Samuel 6:16 But as the Ark of the Lord entered the City of David, Michal, the daughter of Saul, looked down from her window. When she saw King David leaping and dancing before the Lord, she was filled with contempt for him.

2 Samuel 6:20 When David returned home to bless his own family, Michal, the daughter of Saul, came out to meet him. She said in disgust, “How distinguished the king of Israel looked today, shamelessly exposing himself to the servant girls like any vulgar person might do!”

It’s Between You and God It is true when you hear, a person cannot please everyone. When it comes to God and the affairs of God, my friend, it is not about who goes with you, but your relationship with God. Serve God with all your might, just as David danced to the Lord with all his might. There will be those who find fault at anything you do, but let them be and continue on with your life.

This woman Micah was filled with contempt because of King David’s dancing, but God is not a respecter of persons, each one received their reward according to their actions; Acts 10:34 Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth, I perceive that God is no respecter of persons.

As you grow up, you meet different characters of people. Some are very strange, and you wonder what happened to them, but it just happens that the devil came into their lives. They will work at pulling you down and belittling you at any cost. They will only want you to be part of their life but will never be part of yours. In fact, they will be too busy with their own lives when you really need them.

Assurance There is only one sure way to God and that is Jesus Christ. There is only one sure word that will never fail and that is the Word of God. There is only one sure friend that will never disappoint and always wants you to be, who you have been created to be and that is God.

You Are Of More Worth Do not sell yourself short, ‘You are of more worth than many sparrows’, Matthew 10:31. God cares for you so much and you are valuable to Him. Remember child of God, you have been bought with a price by Christ’s blood on the cross, You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of human beings 1 Corinthians 7:23.

You belong to God not man, so live for Him and according to who He has purposed you to be in life. That way, you will be more fulfilled than when you are trying to live according to man’s terms.

Resolution Start living your life to please God not man. People will always talk, whether you do good or bad. Stick to God’s purpose for your life and another person’s purpose for you because there are consequences. God created you to be you and not the other person. Your identity is in Him not in your Pastor, boss, spouse, parents, children or friends. If you are unsure, go back to the one who created you. He knows you best and will calibrate your life to the right order if you allow Him.
