A Clean Heart

Key Text: Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me (Psalm 51:10).

King David is known to be a man of many qualities that can only be admired compared to the kings who followed after him. During his reign as king in Judah and Israel, there were no altars raised other than Jehovah, the Almighty God. He worshipped God like no other king ever did, and he fought more battles than any other king that reigned after him. His kingdom was blessed all through to Jesus', and that kingdom is eternal through Jesus Christ. David was a man so conscious of his life that he raised a prayer to God in Psalm 51. Most of the psalms are prayers to God from David based on his life experiences. Being a king did not get into his head that he was beyond correction, and his character was tested again and again, and each time, he would go back to God, whom He knew had the answers to the issues that troubled him.

David would ask for God's will before setting out for battle, and he would always give thanks after every battle or achievement, unlike King Saul, who lived to please men and not God. Due to David's relationship with God, he knew he could not continue to live life without a change to who he was. He understood that God is not like a man, and He operates in everything with holiness and excellence; so David offered a prayer that could take care of his fallen nature in Psalm 51:10 Create a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.

To know, see and be with God, we must have clean hearts that have no wickedness. God looks at the heart of man in this way, Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it? "I the Lord search the heart and examine the mind to reward each person according to their conduct, according to what their deeds deserve." David understood this truth about the heart of man, and he prayed to have a 'clean heart and a new spirit.' He understood sanctification and did not value his stature as a king but viewed himself as a humble servant of God in need of redemption from his fallen nature. His lifestyle was wild, and he indulged in things contrary to God's holiness, but that did not deter him from approaching God and asking for a divine transformation in his physical and spiritual life.

God is calling us today to re-evaluate our walk with Him and approach Him with repentance. The heart of man is indeed very deceitful, but there is hope for a change. The spirit of man is very delicate that if left unattended, Satan will occupy very fast and cause destruction in a person.

Prayers:

Psalm 51:10-13

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.

Cast me not away from thy presence, and take not thy holy spirit from me.

Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation, and uphold me with thy free spirit.

Then will I teach transgressors thy ways, and sinners shall be converted unto thee.
